If you’re in Austin with a car that has body damage—dents, rust, a cracked windshield, hail or flood scars, or accident damage—you can still donate it through Ride Forward. Cosmetic issues do not disqualify your vehicle. As long as we can safely tow it from where it’s sitting—at your home in South Austin, your apartment in Pflugerville, a shop in Round Rock, or a lot near Mueller—we can usually accept it for donation.
Here’s how it really works in Texas: Ride Forward partners with Heritage for the Blind, a registered 501(c)(3) (EIN 58-2164446). Your damaged car is picked up for free anywhere in the Austin area, running or not. It’s then sold—sometimes at auction, sometimes for parts or scrap—based on its actual condition, not how pretty it looks. Your tax deduction is based on the final sale price. If it sells for less than $500, you’re still guaranteed a receipt for $500. If it sells for more, you can deduct the higher amount using IRS Form 1098-C. You don’t need to fix the damage first, and you never pay for towing.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle
Start online or by phone and briefly describe your car’s condition: dents, rust, cracked glass, hail or flood damage, accident damage, missing body panels, or peeling paint. Share where it’s located—whether it’s in East Austin, Cedar Park, Kyle, or downtown. You don’t need exact repair estimates; a simple, honest description helps us plan the right kind of tow truck.
2. Get a fast donation confirmation
We confirm that your cosmetically or structurally damaged vehicle can be accepted and collect basic info: title status, VIN, and access location. Body damage almost never disqualifies a car. We’ll explain what happens next, how Heritage for the Blind benefits, and how your deduction will be calculated based on the eventual sale price, not appearance.
3. Schedule free towing anywhere in Austin-Round Rock
Choose a pickup time that works for you. We arrange free towing from your driveway in Circle C, a street spot in Hyde Park, your workplace in the Domain area, or a shop in Georgetown. The vehicle can be non-running, undriveable, or missing glass and panels—our tow partners are used to problem cars and handle everything at no cost to you.
4. Hand off the keys and title (if available)
When the tow truck arrives, you’ll sign over the title (if you have it) and hand over the keys. If the car’s damaged so badly it won’t close or lock, that’s okay—just remove your plates if required by Texas and grab your personal items. The driver will load and haul away your vehicle in one visit, usually within a few days of your initial contact.
5. Your car is sold, and you receive your tax receipt
After pickup, your car is sold based on its real-world condition—sometimes at auction, sometimes as a parts or scrap vehicle. Heritage for the Blind receives the proceeds. You get a tax receipt: at minimum, your receipt will reflect a $500 deductible amount; if the sale is higher, you can claim the actual sale price, documented with IRS Form 1098-C.
6. Claim your deduction and feel good about letting it go
Use the receipt when you file your federal taxes. If your deduction exceeds $500, keep the 1098-C with your records. You’ve cleared a damaged vehicle from your driveway, avoided repair costs, and helped fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired—all with one free pickup in the Austin-Round Rock area.
Potential complications to watch for
Severe structural damage that makes towing unsafe
Tip: Even with heavy accident or storm damage, most cars can be safely towed. But if the frame is twisted, wheels are missing, or the vehicle is precariously positioned, we may need special equipment or access. Be as detailed as possible about the damage and where it’s sitting so we can send the right tow truck and avoid rescheduling.
Missing or damaged title for your Austin vehicle
Tip: Texas usually requires a signed title to transfer ownership, even for a damaged car. If your title is missing or was destroyed in a flood or fire, let us know up front. In some cases, we can guide you on requesting a replacement from the Texas DMV so your donation and tax deduction aren’t delayed by paperwork issues.
Parking or storage rules in apartments and HOAs
Tip: If your damaged vehicle is in an apartment complex or HOA community in places like North Burnet or Wells Branch, towing access can be tricky. Check whether the tow truck needs gate codes, permits, or to avoid certain hours. Giving us that information ahead of time helps ensure we can reach the vehicle on the first attempt and keeps neighbors and management happy.
Expectations about deduction versus car’s past value
Tip: A car that looked great before hail, a collision, or rust set in may have lost much of its resale value. The IRS requires that your deduction match the actual sale proceeds, not what the car used to be worth. Understand that heavier body damage usually means a lower sale price—but your minimum guaranteed deductible amount is still $500.
