If your car is sitting in a driveway in Mueller, an apartment lot off Burnet, or a field out near Manor with no keys and no title, you can still donate it through Ride Forward. Both problems are solvable. Missing keys are usually easy for us: as long as a tow truck can reach the vehicle, a flatbed can load and move it without keys. The title is the important part. Once you have a valid Texas (or other state) title in your name, we can complete your donation and issue your tax receipt.
In Texas, donating a car without a title is almost never allowed. So the first step is to request a duplicate or replacement title from your state DMV—usually a short form, a small fee, and about 1–4 weeks of processing. In Austin-Round Rock that typically means working through the Texas DMV and Travis, Williamson, or Hays County tax offices. As soon as that duplicate title is in your hands, you sign it over to Ride Forward, we schedule free pickup anywhere from South Congress to Cedar Park, and our tow partner brings the right equipment to move your keyless vehicle at no cost to you.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm the car’s location and tow access
Walk through how a tow truck would reach the car. Is it in a parking garage at The Domain, a tight alley off East 6th, or a driveway in Pflugerville? Note obstacles, gates, low ceilings, or flat tires. You don’t need keys for this step—just make sure the vehicle is physically reachable by a flatbed so we can plan the right equipment and route for Austin traffic and neighborhoods.
2. Apply for a duplicate title with your state DMV
Next, request a duplicate or replacement title. In Austin-Round Rock that usually means a Texas DMV form and a small fee at your county tax office or by mail. Processing often takes 1–4 weeks. The title must be in your name to donate. If you’ve moved here from another state, you’ll apply with that state’s DMV instead. Start this now; everything else waits on this step.
3. Keep your duplicate title safe and unaltered
When your duplicate title arrives, don’t sign or mark it yet, and keep it somewhere safe and dry. We’ll walk you through exactly where to sign for a donation to Ride Forward benefiting Heritage for the Blind. Having a clean, legible, unaltered title avoids delays with the DMV and ensures you can receive the tax documents you need for your deduction.
4. Contact Ride Forward and explain: no keys, new title
Once you have the duplicate title, reach out to Ride Forward. Tell us clearly that the vehicle has no keys and confirm its exact location—whether that’s in Round Rock, Kyle, Westlake, or central Austin. We’ll collect a few details, answer any last questions, and prepare the donation paperwork so everything is ready before we schedule your free pickup and transfer.
5. Schedule free keyless tow pickup anywhere in Austin-Round Rock
We then schedule a tow at no cost to you, making sure the driver knows the car has no keys. A flatbed can safely load a non-running, locked, or keyless vehicle as long as it’s accessible. Pickup is available across Austin-Round Rock, from Leander to Buda. You don’t pay for towing; it’s part of your donation at zero cost, coordinated around your schedule whenever possible.
6. Sign the title, complete pickup, and get your tax receipt
At or before pickup, you sign the duplicate title over as we direct—usually in a specific seller field. The tow driver or our team confirms the handoff, and the vehicle is on its way. After the car is processed, you’ll receive a tax receipt. Most donors can claim at least a $500 deduction; for amounts over $500 you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C with your return.
Potential complications to watch for
The title isn’t in your name or shows an old owner
Tip: If the missing title was never in your name—or the duplicate comes showing someone else as the owner—you’ll need to fix that before donating. Texas usually requires a proper transfer, sometimes with a bill of sale. Call us before you re-title so you don’t spend time or fees in the wrong direction; we can tell you what the DMV will likely ask for.
The car is blocked in or not safely towable
Tip: A flatbed can move a car without keys, but only if the truck can reach it. Tight garage turns downtown, locked community gates, or cars parked nose-first against a wall can slow things down. When scheduling, describe the exact access situation so we can send the right truck or suggest moving obstacles first. Accurate info up front avoids canceled or rescheduled tows.
Existing liens or loan, even on an old vehicle
Tip: If a bank or finance company is still listed as the lienholder on the title, we normally can’t complete a donation until that lien is released. In many cases, especially on older or paid-off loans, you can request a lien release letter. Check your title and any loan paperwork now. If a lien is present, ask us how best to resolve it with the lender or DMV.
Out-of-state title with different rules and forms
Tip: If the car was last titled in another state—say you moved from California or New York—your duplicate title must come from that state’s DMV, not Texas. The form names and fees will differ. Start by confirming where the car was last legally titled, then request the replacement there. Once you have that title in hand, the Austin pickup process is the same.
