Yes, you can donate a car with expired tags in Austin

In Austin-Round Rock, you can donate a car with expired registration. Ride Forward just needs a valid Texas title, not current tags, and we’ll tow it free and send your tax receipt.

You do NOT have to renew your expired registration to donate your car in Austin. With Ride Forward, you can still donate a vehicle with lapsed tags as long as you have a valid Texas title in your name. We’ll arrange a free tow anywhere in the Austin–Round Rock area, handle the paperwork for the charity transfer, and you’ll receive a tax receipt for your donation that supports Heritage for the Blind.

Here’s how it really works in Texas: registration status isn’t what controls a donation transfer — the title does. If your name is on a clear Texas title, we can accept the vehicle even if it’s been sitting non‑running in a driveway in South Austin, Hyde Park, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, or out by Dripping Springs. You don’t need to pay back registration fees or inspection, and you don’t need to get it roadworthy. Our licensed towing partner comes to you, loads the vehicle, and once it’s picked up, responsibility transfers to the charity. You’ll just need to sign the title and then file a simple notice of transfer with TxDMV so the state knows the car is no longer yours.

How to get your free pickup scheduled

1

1. Check that you have a Texas title in your name

Locate your Texas title and confirm your name is listed as the owner and there are no unresolved liens. Expired registration or inspection is fine — what matters is a clear title. If the vehicle’s been sitting for a while in East Austin, North Loop, or Round Rock, that’s okay; it does not have to be drivable to donate.

2

2. Tell us about your car and expired tags

Start your donation online or by phone and mention that your registration is expired. Share the VIN, general condition (running or not), and where the car is located in the Austin-Round Rock area. This lets us confirm eligibility quickly and schedule pickup without you having to step foot in a tax office or inspection station.

3

3. Schedule your free tow anywhere in Austin-Round Rock

We’ll arrange a free tow that works with your schedule, whether the vehicle is in a Downtown Austin garage, a driveway in South Lamar, an apartment lot in Mueller, or a property out near Leander or Buda. The tow truck comes with the paperwork needed to complete the donation, and you never pay for pickup or storage.

4

4. Sign the title and hand over the keys (if you have them)

At pickup, you’ll sign the Texas title over to the charity following our clear instructions. Keys are helpful but not always required for non‑running vehicles. Once the tow truck leaves, the car is on its way to Ride Forward’s processing partner, and responsibility for the vehicle shifts off of you.

5

5. File your TxDMV transfer notice and keep your receipt

After pickup, submit a Vehicle Transfer Notification with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (online or at a tax office). This tells the state the car is no longer yours. Then watch for your tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind, which you can use when filing your federal return, often with IRS Form 1098‑C for gifts over $500.

Potential complications to watch for

Missing or damaged Texas title

Tip: We can’t complete the donation with expired tags alone; we still need a valid title. If it’s missing or badly damaged, you may need to request a replacement title from TxDMV before pickup. We can talk you through what information you’ll need and how to keep the process as simple as possible.

Unreleased lien still showing on the title

Tip: If a bank or finance company is still listed as lienholder, even if you paid off the loan, the title isn’t clear yet. You’ll need a lien release or updated title showing the lien removed. Check this before scheduling pickup so your donation doesn’t get delayed on the day of tow.

Car abandoned on property you don’t own

Tip: We can only accept donations from the legal owner listed on the title. If the vehicle with expired registration is sitting on a friend’s or landlord’s property but the title is in someone else’s name, we’ll need the titled owner to sign. Sorting this out in advance prevents tow issues or legal questions later.

Not filing the Vehicle Transfer Notification

Tip: Once you donate, the car becomes charity property, but the state still shows your name until a title transfer is processed. Filing the Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV after pickup adds a layer of protection, helping prevent future tolls, tickets, or tax notices from being sent to you by mistake.

FAQ

My Texas registration is over a year expired. Can I still donate?
Yes. The age of the expired registration usually doesn’t matter. Even if your tags are more than a year out of date and the inspection has lapsed, you can typically still donate as long as you have a valid Texas title in your name. You do not need to renew or pay back registration fees first.
Will I owe back registration fees or penalties if I donate?
You generally do not need to pay back registration fees just to donate. Ride Forward does not collect those fees, and we don’t require current tags. Once the vehicle is picked up and you file your Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV, future registration obligations move away from you and to the new owner or the charity’s processor.
Can you tow my car if it’s not inspected or drivable?
Yes. The vehicle does not need to pass inspection or even start. Many Austin donors have cars sitting flat‑tired in driveways in places like Windsor Park, Oak Hill, or Georgetown. Our towing partner will winch or roll the vehicle onto the truck at no cost to you, even if it hasn’t moved in years.
Do I still get a tax deduction if my registration is expired?
Yes. Registration status does not affect your tax receipt. Your deduction is based on IRS rules and what Heritage for the Blind ultimately receives from the vehicle. In most cases you can claim at least up to $500, and for donations above that, the charity will issue IRS Form 1098‑C details for your tax filing.
What paperwork do I need to have ready in Austin?
You’ll need your Texas title in your name, a valid photo ID, and your contact information. Having your registration card is helpful but not required, especially if it’s expired. At pickup, you’ll sign the title and our tow documents, and we’ll explain exactly how to submit your Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV.
What if the car has old Austin parking tickets or tolls?
Unpaid tickets or tolls from before the donation may still be your responsibility. Donating the car does not erase existing citations. However, once you sign over the title, the tow truck takes the car, and you submit the TxDMV transfer notice, new tickets or tolls connected to that vehicle should no longer be associated with you.
Can I donate if my driver’s license is expired too?
An expired driver’s license usually doesn’t stop the donation, but you will still need some form of valid government ID to sign the title. If possible, bring your most current ID and the Texas title in your name. Let us know your situation in advance so we can flag any potential issues before the tow truck arrives.
