How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your vehicle and Austin-area location
Start by calling Ride Forward or filling out our online form. Share your contact info, where the car is parked (for example, East Austin, Cedar Park, Buda, or Leander), and basic vehicle details. Let us know if it runs, whether it’s in a garage, driveway, or street spot, and any special access issues. This helps us match you with the right local tow partner and plan for easy, safe pickup at your address.
2. Pick a convenient local pickup window
Once we have your info, we’ll set up a pickup day and general time window. In most Austin–Round Rock neighborhoods, we can schedule within a few business days. Very central areas like Downtown, Mueller, and South Lamar may have more flexible options; more rural spots outside Manor, Elgin, or Driftwood might take slightly longer. We’ll confirm everything by phone or email, so you know exactly when to expect your driver.
3. Prepare your title, keys, and access for the tow truck
Before pickup day, locate your Texas title and remove personal items from the car. You’ll sign the title as the seller/donor following Texas rules. On the day, you can either meet the driver or leave the title and keys in a safe, pre-agreed location in or on the vehicle. Make sure the car isn’t blocked in, and that there’s room for a flatbed or tow truck to maneuver and hook up.
4. We tow your car for free from your home or lot
A local Austin-area towing partner arrives with a flatbed or hook-and-chain truck. They’ll load your vehicle — running or not — from your driveway, apartment lot, or street spot. There is no charge at pickup and no later invoice; the towing cost comes out of the charity’s sale proceeds. Once the car is secured, the driver takes it away for processing and eventual sale to support Ride Forward’s charitable mission.
5. Receive your tax receipt and finalize your donation
After your vehicle is picked up and sold, Ride Forward sends you a tax receipt. You’re guaranteed at least a $500 tax-deduction receipt; if it sells for more, we’ll issue updated paperwork, and donations over $500 use IRS Form 1098-C. Keep this with your records for tax time. From there, your old car is off your hands and helping fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight Austin parking and flatbed access
Tip: Downtown, West Campus, and South Congress often have narrow streets and tight parking. If your car is in a garage or crowded alley, tell us upfront. We can decide if a smaller truck is needed or if you should move the vehicle to a more open spot nearby so the driver can safely load it without delays or failed pickup attempts.
Gate codes, concierge desks, and HOA rules
Tip: Gated communities in places like Circle C, Steiner Ranch, Avery Ranch, and many North Austin condos often require codes or pre-approved visitor lists for the tow truck. Share any gate codes, building entry details, or HOA restrictions when scheduling. If your complex needs a permit or notice for towing, we’ll work with you so the driver can enter and remove the vehicle without issues.
Very rural or Hill Country addresses
Tip: If you’re outside the core Austin–Round Rock area — maybe near Dripping Springs, Bastrop, Liberty Hill, or out toward the Hill Country — we still pick up, but routing can take longer. Expect a slightly wider pickup window and a few extra business days. Precise directions, landmarks, and driveway notes help drivers find you easily, especially at night or on unmarked county roads.
Missing title or incorrect paperwork
Tip: In Texas, the title is essential to complete a vehicle donation. If you can’t find it, let us know before scheduling so we can explain your options with the Texas DMV. Make sure all owners listed on the title are available to sign, and avoid crossing out sections. Clean, accurate paperwork helps prevent rescheduled pickups and processing delays.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup is tricky at your exact address — for example, a tight downtown garage, a no-tow condo lot, or a ranch road that’s hard for a flatbed to reach — we can usually coordinate alternatives. In some cases, you may be able to meet the tow truck at a nearby open street, a friend’s driveway, or a public lot where towing is allowed.
