Do a 15-minute sweep before the tow truck arrives. Remove the garage-door remote, spare house keys, toll transponder, parking permits, disability placards, insurance card, registration, glovebox papers, loose cash, chargers, sunglasses, child items, and anything in the trunk. Delete Bluetooth pairings, HomeLink buttons, saved addresses, and garage codes from the infotainment system. Leave the keys and the signed-over title with the car.
Your pre-pickup checklist
Remove security items first
Start with anything that opens a door, gate, or secure area. Take out the garage-door remote, apartment gate remote, office parking fob, building access card, and any spare house keys. Check the visor, cup holders, center console, door pockets, and key ring. If the vehicle has programmable garage buttons, do not rely on removing the remote only. You will wipe those settings later.
Pull billing items next
Remove the toll transponder, parking pass, campus permit, garage sticker, and any prepaid fuel, wash, or membership cards. Then remove the donated vehicle from the toll account itself. Pulling the tag is not always enough, because some systems bill by license plate. Take a photo of the transponder number or account screen for your records before you close or edit anything.
Clear the glovebox papers
Take out your insurance card, registration, old repair invoices, inspection papers, financing letters, warranty folders, and any mail with your name or address. Check the owner manual sleeve and every folded document pocket. Keep anything you may need for your records. The exception is the ownership document Ride Forward needs: the signed-over title should stay with the vehicle.
Sweep cabin and trunk
Work front to back. Look under the seats, between seat cushions, inside seat-back pockets, behind floor mats, in door bins, in the center console, on both visors, and in all cup holders. Then check the cargo area, trunk side pockets, jack compartment, and spare-tire well. Remove cash, tools you intend to keep, medication, electronics, sunglasses, clothing, and children’s items.
Wipe saved vehicle data
Factory-reset the infotainment system if the vehicle allows it. Delete Bluetooth pairings, call logs, contacts, navigation history, saved home and work addresses, garage codes, Wi-Fi settings, apps, and voice profiles. Clear HomeLink or other built-in garage controls. If the screen does not offer a reset, use the menu to delete each phone, address, and garage setting one at a time.
Remove optional add-ons only
You may remove personal aftermarket items such as a dash cam, phone mount, upgraded stereo faceplate, child seat, cargo organizer, or removable GPS unit. Keep the car intact and as-described. Do not remove parts that make the vehicle unsafe to load or different from what you reported. If an add-on was included in your donation details, contact Ride Forward before taking it out.
Leave keys and title
After your sweep, leave the keys and the signed-over title with the car for free pickup. Include every key you are donating, such as the main key, spare key, remote fob, wheel-lock key, or alarm remote. Put the title where it will not blow away or get wet. Do one final look around the driveway before the vehicle leaves.

Quick final pass before pickup
Stand at the driver door and do one last loop. Say each category out loud: security, billing, documents, personal items, trunk, data, add-ons, keys, title. This helps catch small things during a busy day. In Austin apartment garages and shared parking areas, also check for gate cards, hang tags, and resident permits that may be easy to miss. When those are out and the keys and signed-over title are in, your sweep is complete.
Common questions
Should I remove my insurance card and registration?
Yes. Remove the insurance card, registration, and routine glovebox papers unless Ride Forward specifically asked for a document. Keep copies of anything you may need later. The signed-over title is different from those routine papers. It should stay with the car because it is needed to transfer ownership.
What if I forget something in the car?
Contact Ride Forward as soon as you notice. Give your donor name, vehicle description, and the item you left behind. Do not assume the item can be recovered after the vehicle has moved through the donation process. The best protection is the 15-minute sweep before the tow truck takes the car.
Can I remove a dash cam or upgraded stereo?
You can remove personal add-ons if they are yours and the vehicle remains intact and as-described. Good examples are a dash cam, phone mount, child seat, or removable GPS unit. Do not remove required parts, safety equipment, or anything you already included as part of the vehicle description.
Do I cancel tolls and insurance before pickup?
Remove the toll transponder and take the vehicle off your toll account before the car leaves. For insurance, contact your insurer and follow its instructions for your policy and situation. Rules and coverage needs can vary, so do not rely on a generic checklist for that decision.
